چکیده

The present study analyzes the complications of intracorneal ring segment implantation using a femtosecond laser for channel creation in patients with keratoconus. This technique, as in all surgical procedures, a risk of complications is always present and must be addressed appropriately to ensure that optimal results are achieved with the least possible incidence of adverse effects. We fully discussed possible intraand post-operative complications of this surgery and how to manage them. Complications such as endotelial perforation, incorrect entry of the cannel, galvanometer lag error, abnormality-shaped channel creation, vacuum loss, segment migration, decentration, axis incision, corneal melting, neovascularization and infection are described and discussed. Intrastromal corneal ring segment implantation with the femtosecond laser in a post-keratoplasty patient with recurrent keratoconus.

A 50-year-old woman had implantation of intrastromal corneal ring segments for recurrent keratoconus 15 years after penetrating keratoplasty. Two segments (0.15 mm and 0.25 mm) were inserted without any intraoperative or postoperative complications, using the femtosecond laser to create the tunnels (superior and inferior). Ten months after the procedure, the uncorrected visual acuity was 20/100...

Actual Indications for Intracorneal Ring Segment Implantation in Keratoconus

Intracorneal ring segments (ICRS) are small synthetic implements designed to achieve refractive adjustment by flattening the cornea. Three common types of commercially available ICRS are Intacs, Keraring and Ferrara rings. Low myopia was the initial indication for implantation of ICRS, and indications later included ectatic corneal diseases (such as keratoconus and pellucid marginal degeneratio...
